She had slowed down to let a car on the side of the road finish pulling out of a parking spot when she was hit from behind by another car. Marley exchanged details with the other driver, Lara. Marley doesn't have comprehensive car insurance but she has a CTP green slip and her car is registered. Marley doesn't know what she should do next to get her car fixed.

After an accident there are several things you may need to do. These include:

Reporting the accident to the Police

Not all accidents have to be reported to the police.

For information about when and how to report an accident to the police, as well as getting information about the accident from the police, see Calling the police.

If you or someone in your car was hurt in the accident, see Injuries.

Exchanging details with the other driver

It is important that the people involved in a car accident have each other's contact details.

For more information about what details to get, and how to get them if the other driver will not provide them, see Exchanging details.

Alert IconIf the other driver will not exchange details, you should make a note of the other car's registration plates and report the accident to the police within 24 hours.

    Gathering evidence

At the scene of an accident it is important to write down the names and contact details of any witnesses. It is also important to take photos of the place where the accident happened and any damage to your car or the other driver's car. This may help you if you need to claim the cost of repairs from the other driver or if the other driver makes a claim against you.

For more information, see Gathering evidence.

    Getting repair quotes

After the accident, you (or the owner of the car) will want to know what the cost of repairing the damage will be, and whether it is worth repairing the car. You can get quotes from a panel beater.

For more information, see Getting repair quotes.

    Contacting your insurance company

If your car is insured, you should tell your insurance company about the accident even if you don't think you were at fault or if the damage to your car is minor (less than your excess).

For more information, see Contacting your insurance company.

For further information, see What to do after an accident - Frequently Asked Questions.
