Disputes about goods - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will the police help me get back a laptop I lent to a friend?

The police may not be able to help you if you let your friend have the laptop, even if it was only for a limited period of time. For more information, see Stolen goods.

Alert iconIf you are not sure if goods are stolen you should get legal advice.

If the police will not help, you may be able to take steps to recover the goods yourself.

For more information, see Getting your goods back.

2. I stored some furniture at my sister's house seven years ago. About a year ago I asked if I could arrange to pick it up. She said I had left it too late and she had thrown everything out. Is it too late to do anything?

If you want to start a case in a court to recover goods, you usually have to do this within six years of when you first demanded the return of the goods. If you didn't ask for the goods back until one year ago, you may still be within time to do something. For more information, see Time limits.

You won't be able to get the goods back if they have been destroyed, but you can ask a court for an order for money to be paid to you for the value of the goods. For more information, see What are the goods worth?

3. What evidence will I need to show that I own a painting that is at my friend's house? He says it is his.

You should think about what evidence you have which shows that you own the painting. Evidence could be:

  • a receipt
  • other records of payment for example, electronic payment
  • insurance documents mentioning the painting
  • photographs of the painting in your home or with you.

For more information, see Ownership of goods.

4. My friend is asking for money for goods I threw out. What evidence will my friend need to show of what her goods are worth?

If your friend wants to make a claim in a court for the value of the goods, she will need to show some evidence of what the goods are worth.

Things that could show value include:

  • receipts
  • insurance documents showing insured value
  • evidence of second hand value of similar goods
  • valuation from an expert.

For more information, see What are the goods worth?
