​W​hen someone dies

This figure is a flowchart with labelled boxes linked by lines. The flowchart describes the steps you can take after someone dies. Each box in the flowchart contains a hyperlink to further information. The action you take will depend on your responses to each step in the flowchart. The flowchart is described as a list of 11 steps. Where there are possible actions, these are listed beneath that step.

Step 1. Someone dies (the deceased) [link to Who do you notify after someone dies]. Go to Step 2.

Step 2. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) and other organisations are notified of the person's death [link to Who do you notify after someone dies]. Got to Step 3.

Step 3. Depending on the circumstances, the death may need to be reported to the Coroner [link to Who do you notify after someone dies]. Go to Step 4.

Step 4. You search for the will [link to The will]. Possible action:

Step 5.  The next of kin organises the funeral [link to Funerals]. Go to Step 6.

Step 6. The funeral director or next of kin registers the death at BDM and gets the death certificate [link to The death certificate].

Step 7. There is a will. Possible action:

  • The will names an executor [link to Funerals]. Go to Step 8.
  • The will does not name an executor or the executor is unable to act [link to Funerals]. Go to Step 10.

Step 8.  The executor organises the funeral [link to Funerals]. Go to Step 9.

Step 9. The Funeral director or executor registers the death at BDM and gets the death certificate [link to The death certificate].

Step 10. The next of kin organises the funeral [link to Funerals]. Go to Step 11.
